Something
about good keywords
A
good keyword should be both relevant to the topic of
the domain (for a high CTR), and commercially-applicable
(for a high CPC). Here are a few tips on how to choose
a keyword that will maximize both of these factors:
Where
did the user come from? Try to use keywords that provide
the answer
to the question "what was the user looking for when
he typed in this website?" It helps to understand
where your traffic is coming from: is it a typo of another
website (try Google's spell check feature), an expired
website (look it up in Archive.org), or a generic type-in?
Figure out where your visitors are coming from and you'll
have a better idea of what they're looking for.
Will
the ads appeal to what your visitors are looking for?
Which sounds more
appealing to you: "Discount flights" or "airplane
tickets"? "Download mp3s" or simply "music"?
Try to find terms with ads that your site's visitors
will want to click on.
Choose
a commercially-applicable topic: Once you know the
general subject area that your
users are interested in, focus your keywords on commercially-applicable
niches within that interest area. For example, if your
domain is golf-related, consider "golf holiday" or "golf
equipment" rather than just "golf".
Be
Specific: Specific terms will usually yield a better
click-through rate
and greater earnings. For example, if your domain name
is CelineDion.com, try "Buy Celine Dion CDs" or "Download
Celine Dion MP3s" instead of just "Music".
Assuming they are targeted, focused niches usually pay
better than more general terms. For example, "home-based
business" will generally perform better than "business",
and "personal injury lawyer" better than "lawyer".
Try
using multiple related terms: Sometimes you can expand
the pool of available
advertisements (and thus get a higher CPC) by using multiple
related terms rather than just one. For example, rather
than just "online dating", try entering multiple
related terms (without a comma) such as "online
dating personals love". Instead of just "ISP" try "ISP
Internet Service Provider DSL broadband". Preview
the pages for each group of keywords: if you're seeing
a lot of relevant ads, you should be doing well. When
this technique works well, you get the highest paying
ads in each niche, and your visitors have a wide choice
of ads to click on-all of them well paying!
Use
the right language: If your domain receives traffic
primarily from a certain
country, you should choose a keyword in the language
of that country. For example, if your domain is Voiture.com
(French for "car"), you should choose the keyword "Voiture" rather
than "car".
Make sure there
are plenty of advertisers: Test all of your keyword suggestions.
Make sure there are at least three or four ads (ideally
there will be ten). If there are only one or two ads,
not only will the CPC be low, but there is a risk that
the advertisers will exhaust their budget and your page
will be left without advertisements.
